How does the C-Scope curriculum fit for the Special Ed student?
As much as possible students will need to be taught on grade level because of the changing nature of the assessments. However, you can look at the vertical alignment documents, determine the specificity for the grade level, go back to the grade level of the student's performance and look at the specificity there to determine how best to scaffold that student's learning. A teacher can also access all grade levels within CSCOPE to investigate activities that might best fit the student's needs.
It is by design that CSCOPE builds rather than separating review of prior year's content at the beginning of the school year. The approach is one of a spiraled curriculum. As such, we purposefully use grade-level content to address the issue of building competency in the TEKS. Naturally, you may find students who would benefit from additional review and may have to supplement the lessons with additional time or other specific interventions that will support their learning.
CSCOPE affords teachers the opportunity to design independent practice based on individual students' needs. Teachers are in the best position to make appropriate assignments based on student strengths and weaknesses and are encouraged to do so. As in any Tier 1 curriculum, accommodation and accommodations will have to be at the teacher level based on each student's specific IEP. There is no way CSCOPE could design instructional activities that would meet the needs of every students in Texas. The curriculum components however provide a deep understanding of the standards and how they evolve from one grade level to the next. Through the VAD, teachers can identify how each standard is aligned to make determinations about where a student's learning broke down or gaps exist and therefore decide how to most appropriately scaffold without watering down the curriculum.
Each Year at a Glance builds in flex time that provides opportunity for extended time, reteaching, review, etc. The TEKS Verification Matrix allows teachers to see how many times a standard will be addressed throughout the academic year. The Vertical Alignment Document lays what students should know about each standard from one grade level to the next. And finally, the unit tests can be modified through programs like Eduphoria Aware or DMAC to support required testing modifications such as larger font, fewer answer choices and more white space.
