ESC 19 Teacher Apprenticeship
-
Are you interested in becoming a teacher's aide or a teacher?
Do you need to work and go to college at the same time?
Would you like to work in a setting that prepares you for your future teaching career?
ESC 19 is starting a teaching apprenticeship through our ESC 19 Head Start and in partnership with ESC 19's Teacher Preparation and Certification Program. We are also partnering with El Paso Community College and the University of Texas at El Paso. An apprenticeship involves -
- One-the-job learning under a master or senior worker
- A wage while completing on-the-job training
- Classroom instruction
- Nationally recognized credential at successful completion
Apprenticeships also come with funding opportunities that can pay for on-the-job training, wages and other supportive services such as child-care and tuition. (Funding opportunities are available to candidates that meet certain eligibility and income requirements.)
Candidates that are part of the apprenticeship will be attending college at EPCC or UTEP, depending on where they are at in their educational journey. They will also be working full-time at one of our ESC 19 Head Starts as a teacher assistant alongside a highly-skilled Head Start teacher. As a teacher assistant, candidates will receive professional development to help them be successful in the classroom. Candidates may choose to work towards their Associate's degree and complete the Teacher Aide Apprenticeship which is a 2-year program. Candidates wishing to pursue a Texas teaching certificate will continue to the K-12 Teacher Apprenticeship which is a 3-year program. The K-12 Teaching Apprenticeship requires candidates to complete a Bachelor's degree and attend the ESC 19 Teacher Preparation and Certification Program.
We are holding an information session for any individuals that are interested in this opportunity. Please see the flyer below and be sure to register on Click and Learn to attend this virtual information session.

Will the apprenticeship accommodate my schedule at UTEP or EPCC?
The apprenticeship is a full-time job, Monday thru Friday. Candidates will need to take classes that are self-paced and online or schedule classes outside of their schedule. Candidates wishing to pursue teacher certification in Early childhood to Third Grade (Early Childhood: Pre-kindergarten – Grade 3 (EC: PK - 3) ) will be pursuing an Associate of Arts in Teacher Preparation (All Grade Levels) and a Bachelors of Science in Education with a Concentration in Early Childhood Care & Education (Birth to Age 5). Both of these degrees can be completed online.
We are currently working to secure partnerships with other districts for teaching certifications outside of Early Childhood: Pre-kindergarten – Grade 3 (EC: PK - 3).

When is the apprenticeship launch?
Our launch is pending approval by the Department of Labor. We will post information here once we have the date scheduled.
-
What Head Start location will I be placed at?
It depends on which campuses currently have vacancies. We will be able to share more information at our launch event.
-
Is the apprenticeship paid?
Yes, apprentices are hired, full-time ESC 19 Head Start employees. Wage scales will be released once our apprenticeship has been approved by the Department of Labor. A component of an apprenticeship are wage increases as the apprentice masters skills, which are referred to as competencies.
