Written by Carlos De La Torre
El Paso, Texas (May 12, 2020)—El Paso Independent School District Superintendent Juan Cabrera has been named the 2020 ESC-Region 19 Superintendent of the Year for his outstanding achievements and excellence as a public-school administrator.
“The success of EPISD is the result of the collaboration that exists among our students, teachers and community members. I am grateful to be a part of this amazing family,” Juan Cabrera said in a story Written by EPSID’s Gustavo Reveles. “It is this desire to collaborate that will bring EPISD even more accolades and help our students reach their highest potential.” EPISD Board President Bob Geske said about Cabrera, “This honor comes as no surprise to anyone who has worked alongside Mr. Cabrera. Mr. Cabrera has helped transition EPISD from a District with deep governance and fiscal problems to one of the most innovative and admired urban school districts in the country.”
Since becoming the Superintendent of Schools for EPISD in 2013, Cabrera lead efforts to modernize various aging district facilities, resulting in the passage of Bond 2016 — the largest school bond ever to be approved by the voters of El Paso. He also was critical in the success of two separate Tax Ratification Elections that helped EPISD address budget shortfalls as well as instructional and technology needs. In addition to these accomplishments, Cabrera is also responsible for being the catalyst to expand the innovative dual-language and International Baccalaureate programs. Technology has also been something Mr. Cabrera has seen as instrumental in education. The establishment of New Tech Network campuses and the opening of the only dual-language and STEAM-centered school for girls in the county was an important project Cabrera spearheaded to make happen for EPISD.
According to the EPISD website, Cabrera has also been active during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He has been recognized for his leadership in helping to create the EPISD@HOME comprehensive distance learning program. EPISD@HOME has been successful because of the District’s growth in technology education, including the distribution of tens of thousands of laptops and computer devices.
Cabrera will go on to represent the region in the state program. The state Superintendent of the Year Award will be presented at the 2020 Texas Association of School Administrators/Texas Association of School Boards (TASA/TASB) Annual Convention in Dallas, Texas.
