Innovative Construction & Architecture ESC 19 Summer Program Comes to a Close
The iBuild El Paso Summer Program was an initiative from Education Service Center Region 19 in partnership with the Texas Education Agency, Jordan Foster Construction, and MNK Architects. The program was started to support students and educators in the areas of architecture and construction. Efren Tarango, a Professional Development Consultant for ESC Region 19, says, “Students explored subjects such as Mathematics in Construction, Project Management Skills, Emerging Technologies in Construction, and other similar subject areas.” Students in this summer program were divided into two groups based on the students’ grade levels. This program allowed for High School students, whose schools participated in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification programs, to complete their OSHA. El Paso, Ft. Hancock, and San Elizario Independent School Districts’ students were able to complete their OSHA 30 course and certification through the iBuild El Paso program.
At the beginning of the summer, Joe M. Gomez, Director of Business Development & Community Affairs at Jordan Foster Construction told us, “Bringing in young Architects and young Civil Engineers to get important background on this industry is what we want. Internships and Apprenticeships in the construction business are invaluable. It’s extremely hands-on which is something we’re proud of,” The Health and Safety Institute gave the student access to a course where they were able to work independently and accumulate 890 total hours of developmental seat time. Tarango says, “The students were presented with opportunities to hear from local professionals from Jordan Foster and MK Architecture. During these small group sessions, the students were provided insight into many dynamics that make up the industry and the lessons learned during their respective careers.” It's safe to say that the individuals who brought this program to fruition executed their goal of it being a hands-on program for the participating students to gain first-hand experience with industry professionals to prepare them for the workforce after High School.
This summer program and accompanying certifications will facilitate students getting jobs that pay anywhere from $45-75 an hour right out of high school! Joe M. Gomez, Director of Business Development & Community Affairs at Jordan Foster Construction tells us, “Region 19 is ahead of a lot of folks with this externship program. And we at Jordan Foster Construction are happy to be teaming up with them and enjoy passing on experience and information to a younger generation.”
