El Pasoan Ryan Medrano won two silver medals after competing in the men’s 400-meter T38 and the men’s 100m T38 at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.
Medrano, an alumnus of Coronado High School and the Center for Career and Technology Education, represented Team USA in several events, including the Men’s 100m T38, 400m T38, and Long Jump T38. These events were scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 31, 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3, and 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4 (Paris time). T38 is a classification for athletes with cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury who have mild to moderate coordination impairments.
Born with a disability and initially told he might never walk; Medrano’s journey to the Paralympics highlights his extraordinary dedication and resilience. In a recent interview, Medrano shared, “I’m really pushing to try to get that gold and bring that home for the Sun City. To be able to repay everybody that’s ever believed in me, every donation I’ve gotten, every friend that said, ‘I believe in you,’ it’s like a push on the back to push me past that finish line.”
Known for his tenacity and athletic skill, Medrano’s progression from high school wrestling to the Paralympic Games is a testament to his hard work and perseverance. His participation marks a significant milestone in his career and continues to inspire those around him.
El Paso ISD Superintendent Diana Sayavedra expressed pride in Medrano’s accomplishments, stating, "Ryan's achievements remind us that with determination and hard work, anything is possible. He exemplifies the spirit of our district, and we are all cheering for him as he competes on the world stage."
Medrano is also a strong advocate for disability awareness and inclusion, using his platform to promote accessibility and equal opportunities. His success in the Paralympics not only represents a personal achievement but also serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for the El Paso ISD community and beyond.
El Paso ISD Athletic Director David Cervantes commented, “Ryan’s journey from our local high schools to the Paralympic Games is nothing short of remarkable. His commitment and ability to overcome challenges are powerful examples for all our student-athletes. We are excited to see him represent El Paso and the United States in Paris.”
