Gear Up Students Visit Copper Refinery for Gear Up Work-Based Learning

Gear Up Freeport McMoran Field Trip

Over sixty 7th grade students from San Elizario ISD Ann M. Garcia-Enriquez Middle School (GEMS) attended Freeport-McMoran, one of the world’s largest publicly traded copper companies on May 22.

The field trip to the El Paso refinery provided a work-based learning-opportunity for students, facilitated by ESC Region 19 as part of the Gear Up grant.

Students took a tour of the rod mill to see how copper is processed in the refinery.

Engineers at the company taught the students about metallurgy and the story of copper.

“The sciences are very important to us,” Brad Wesstrom, Freeport-McMoran Senior Process Engineer said. “We are giving back to our community by contributing to education of the sciences within the school districts so that we can have future employees to continue our work.”

Students learned the importance of understanding geometry and chemistry with all aspects of copper.

ESC Region 19 has partnered with San Elizario ISD to provide college-readiness services and support to GEMS students for a 7-year period to ensure success in their careers.

“We brought students Freeport-McMoran to expose them to the different careers that the community offers,” Adriana Escobedo, ESC Region 19 Gear Up grant coordinator, said. “We will be helping this cohort of students throughout high school and follow them as they enter college.”
