Announcing the 2020 Region 19 Teachers of the Year
(El Paso, TX) – August 27, 2019 – Education Service Center (ESC) Region 19 is proud to announce the 2020 Region 19 Teachers of the Year, Perla Lozoya and Michelle Sandoval. Both teachers have been selected among six state finalists and will compete to be the Texas Teacher of the Year.
Perla Lozoya, teacher at Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary in the Socorro Independent School District (SISD) has been named the Region 19 Elementary Teacher of the Year. Lozoya is a fourth-grade teacher and has 14 years of teaching experience. Before becoming an educator, she was a social worker who offered teen parents guidance and support.
Michelle Marie Sandoval, eighth-grade math teacher at Parkland Middle School in the Ysleta Independent School District (YISD) has been named the Region 19 Secondary Teacher of the Year. This school year marks her 12th year as an educator.
El Paso Area’s Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU) co-sponsors the annual Region 19 Teacher of the Year program. This year, TFCU awarded the top three teachers in elementary and secondary categories with generous cash prizes.
Region 19 Elementary Teacher of the Year Finalists:
- 1st place: Perla Lozoya, Socorro ISD
- 2nd place: Cynthia Meza, San Elizario ISD
- 3rd place: Elias Mendoza, Clint ISD
Region 19 Secondary Teacher of the Year Finalists:
- 1st place: Michelle Sandoval, Ysleta ISD
- 2nd place: Carolina Lopez, Canutillo ISD
- 3rd place: Jesus Alvarez, Fabens ISD
