Dr. Vijil is transitioning to FISD after serving as Associate Superintendent for Canutillo Independent School District since 2016. She is proud of Canutillo ISD's many accomplishments including receiving the only State Accountability Rating of “A” in the region for 2017-2018 and feels a strong connection to the smaller districts in the El Paso Area.

“I was born and raised in El Paso and am honored to give back to the region that provided me with great opportunities," Dr. Vijil said. "Fabens ISD is a community with a rich history that has a quest to provide excellent education, access, and opportunity to all students - I want to be a part of that effort and believe that I can make a positive impact toward these efforts. My vision for Fabens ISD is to build a community of learners where no student goes backward. I will commit to being visible, present, and advocate for what is best for the district while being fiscally responsible with our finances.”

Dr. Vijil is a graduate of Burgess High School and began her educational career as an English teacher at Riverside Middle School. After a seven-year teaching position in Indianapolis, Dr. Vijil relocated to the Houston area where she served as a science teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, and Executive Director of Data Management & Compliance for Spring ISD. Since September 2012, Dr. Vijil also served as an Adjunct Professor at Sam Houston State University where she taught a Campus Business Management course as part of the Master of Education in Administration and the Principal Certification programs.

“We’re excited for R19 on Fabens ISD’s selection of Dr. Vijil for their new superintendent,” Education Service Center – Region 19 Executive Director, Dr. Armando Aguirre said. “Her experiences are vast and her dedication to creating opportunities for all students will have a great impact on the Fabens community.”

Dr. Vijil earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Texas at El Paso and a Master of Education from Indiana Wesleyan University in Indianapolis. Vijil later earned her Doctorate of Educational Leadership from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, after completing her dissertation entitled, “Experiences of High School Hispanic Girls in Pursuit of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics-Related Coursework and Careers.” She has also earned five Texas Educator Certificates and is the recipient of numerous accolades including the Spring ISD Secondary Principal and Teacher of the Year and two-time state semi-finalist in the HEB Excellence in Education Award.
